How to Plan a Website Before Design Begins

A short planning workshop can prevent months of guessing about pages, content and priorities.

A designer sketching a website structure on paper

Most website problems start before anyone opens a design tool. The team has not agreed on who the site is for or what it should make happen.

Write down the three most common customer questions, the action you want people to take and the pages needed to support that action. This becomes the brief for everything that follows.

Agree on the first version

A first version can be focused without being unfinished. Decide what belongs at launch and what can wait for real customer feedback.

Name the decision maker

One person should be able to approve the structure and final copy. Otherwise small decisions can stall for weeks.
